Indian Startups Raised $2.099 Billion This Month [August 2024] – Key Insights and Analysis

In August, the total investments in Indian startups experienced a huge surge of 72.88%, with a total of $2.099 billion raised across 121 deals which marked a notable increase compared to the previous month.
Among the key investments were Zepto, Ola Electric, FirstCry, and OYO. Leading Quick commerce unicorn, Zepto, raised $340mn, the highest capital this month. At the same time, Ola Electric, a B2C-modeled EV startup secured $332mn in the Equity round, with funding led by Anchor investors. This was followed by FirstCry, an E-commerce brand based in Pune which raised a significant funding of $216mn in its Growth stage led by financial giants such as SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, and Goldman Sachs. Gurugram-based hospitality startup OYO garnered $175mn in a Series-G round. These 4 companies accounted for approximately 50.6% of the total investment.

[Stage-Wise Analysis]

Growth Stage Deals

In the wave of growth-stage deals, several startups secured substantial funding, reflecting the strength and potential of the ecosystem. Zepto, a leading player in the quick commerce space, raised $340 million, marking one of the largest deals in this round.

Ola Electric followed closely with $332 million, further accelerating its expansion in the electric vehicle segment. FirstCry, the e-commerce platform for baby and kids’ products, garnered $216 million, continuing its dominance in the retail sector.

There were other noteworthy investments in this stage. Ather Energy, a B2C-modeled EV startup raised $71 million of significant investment, while Mumbai-headquartered FinTech firm, Neo secured $48 million in the Series-B round. San Francisco-based AI startup, Opkey followed closely with a $47 million deal. E2E Networks, with funding led by its Group of investors, secured $50 million funding. Overall, 39 startups raised a total of $1.837 billion in the growth stage in August.

Early-Stage Deals

In early-stage funding, a total of 65 startups collectively raised $261.474 million. The top 3 deals were clinched by SolarTech, AgriTech, and SaaS sector startups. This included Gurugram-based BluePine which secured the highest investment of $28.2 million, followed by Efficient Capital Labs, a Bengaluru-headquartered startup, that raised $11 million in a series A round. Additionally, a B2C-modeled EV startup Fresh Bus, raised $10.5 million.

Other noteworthy early-stage startups that secured investments included Agrizy, a B2B-focused enterprise that raised substantial funding of $9.8 million. This funding was led by Accion and Omnivore. InvestorAi, a Europe-based SaaS company, and Bengaluru-based ChemTech startup Scimplify both received $9.5 million in funding.

Round-Wise Analysis

Seed and Series A rounds emerged as the most prevalent, with 24 deals each. These were followed by Pre-Series A rounds, which saw 13 deals, while Equity and Undisclosed rounds both secured 10 deals. Debt and Series B rounds each closed 8 deals, and Series C attracted 4 deals. Pre-seed rounds saw 3 deals, with Series D and Corporate rounds finalizing 3 and 2 deals respectively. Other rounds like Angel, Series E, Pre-Series B, Series F, Series G, Series A3, Series B1, Secondary, and Venture rounds, closed 1 or 2 deals each.

Business Model-Wise Analysis

The B2C model emerged as the most dominant, securing 49 deals, closely followed by the B2B model with 48 deals. The D2C model also garnered significant attention, closing 24 deals, collectively representing a major share of the total deals closed during the period.

Sector-wise Analysis

In August, FinTech dominated the funding landscape, closing 22 deals. SaaS followed with 12 deals, while E-Commerce and AI sectors saw strong investor interest with 11 and 9 deals respectively. HealthTech and FMCG each secured 7 deals, while EV and SportsTech garnered 8 and 4 deals respectively. FoodTech and PropTech closed 3 deals each.

Additionally, sectors such as SpaceTech, ChemTech, InsurTech, Social Networking, AgriTech, Beauty-Commerce, BioTech, FashionTech, WealthTech, and EnterpriseTech attracted attention, each reporting 2 deals. Various other sectors including SolarTech, Fitness, Cyber Security, MedTech, AutoTech, Renewable Energy, Gaming, TravelTech, DeepTech, DroneTech, FemTech, and RoboTech saw single-deal activity.

City-wise Analysis

The highest number of investments was observed in Bangalore, with 38 deals. This was followed by 22 deals in Mumbai and 18 in Gurugram. Additionally, Delhi recorded 12 deals, while Pune saw 7 investments. Chennai and Hyderabad reported 4 and 3 deals respectively, with Noida also securing 3 investments. Meanwhile, Singapore and San Francisco both had 2 deals each. Cities like Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Mangalore, Nashik, Jodhpur, and Dehradun, along with Europe, each reported 1 deal.

Undisclosed deals

There were 17 undisclosed deals made in August, predominantly in their early stages. Among them were Mumbai-based Boldfit and sports-focused Game Theory. AI-driven startups like Vitra.ai and Cogniquest also garnered investor support, while FinTech firms such as IppoPay followed suit. Additionally, platforms like FlexiBees, Adukale, CricHeroes, and Flam attracted funding. Diverse sectors saw growth, with PadelPark India, NxtCube, TailBlaze, and Humanize all drawing investment interest. Consumer brands like Metaman, OneMoney, and Swiggy, along with mobility tech company BiUP Technologies, also closed significant but undisclosed funding rounds.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In strategic moves across various industries, several companies expanded their portfolios and market reach through significant mergers and acquisitions.
Infibeam Avenues made a noteworthy acquisition of a majority stake in Rediff.com, to enhance its digital services and strengthen its online presence. Similarly, SaveDesk deepened its foothold in the fintech sector by acquiring a 90% stake in Fairexpay, reinforcing its financial technology offerings.

In the gaming industry, Nazara Technologies played a strategic role by acquiring the IP rights of Ultimate Teen Patti from Games24x7, aiming to build a more robust gaming ecosystem. Furthering its commitment to the sector, Nazara also secured Fusebox Games in a significant ₹228 crore deal, which underscored its dominance in the gaming arena.

Job-tech and flexible work models saw a boost as Instawork acquired Able Jobs, a job-tech startup, expanding its capabilities and allowing it to explore new market segments.

Meanwhile, Nazara’s Absolute Sports continued its expansion by acquiring the assets of DeltiasGaming.com, reinforcing its commitment to gaming.

In the fashion industry, Shobitam, an ethnic apparel brand, diversified its offerings by acquiring IsadoraLife, thereby extending its market reach. The EV charging industry also witnessed expansion as Exicom acquired Tritium, a leader in the sector, extending its global footprint in the electric vehicle market.

The HR technology space saw a major investment as Apax Partners acquired a 52% stake in GreyHR, which highlighted the growing importance of tech-driven HR solutions.
In the entertainment industry, Radio Mirchi’s Parent company, ENIL, acquired Ganna.com for ₹25 lakhs.

In the financial services sector, Jai Kisan, a rural fintech startup, gained RBI approval to acquire a majority stake in Kushal Finnovation Capital, strengthening its position in rural financial services.

Veefin also expanded its digital banking footprint with the acquisition of Nityo Tech, enhancing its technological capabilities.
In a move to broaden its presence in Europe, OYO acquired Paris-based Checkmyguest in a $27.4 million cash and stock deal.

In a strategic move, CoinDCX, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, elevated Mridul Gupta to the position of Founding Partner, strengthening its leadership team to navigate the complex digital currency landscape.

Fast-growing e-commerce platform Meesho, enhanced its board by appointing four distinguished directors, including Hari S Bhartia from Jubilant Bhartia Group, Kalpana Morparia, Rohit Bhagat, and Surojit Chatterjee.
