How To Disable Facial Recognitions Across Social Networks?

It is a common scenario that people upload photos across different Social Media Platforms. The faces present in the photos which are uploaded on the platform are recognized by using technologies. This feature is mainly to help the users tag their friends or family in the photo. It recognizes the faces and collects location data for improving their algorithm. It helps in creating a network of data which will eventually help the companies in advertisements. Gathering of such details might become a problem for the users concerning their privacy details. Recently with the EU’s GDPR Law, Facebook was asked to delete the data of European citizens owing to privacy issues.

How To Disable Facial Recognition Feature?

However fascinating it seems, the facial recognition feature is still in its development stage. Over time, Facebook and other Social Network might improve it when they find new concepts. Some of the people might regard the feature as harmless while some might link it to their privacy. Whichever way the user feels, most of you might want to disable it unless you have decided the option to go with it.

Follow the below steps to disable the feature on Facebook

Step 1: Log into your Facebook account and click on the inverted triangle on the top right corner of the page.

Step 2:  Select Settings from the drop-down menu which appears.

Step 3: Click on Privacy from the left pane on the Settings page.

Step 4: Select the Timeline & Tagging.

Step 5: In the Timeline & Tagging menu, scroll down to the option which says, “Who can see Tag suggestions of me when photos which looks like me are uploaded?”

Step 6: Click on Edit for that question.

Step 7: Select “No one” from the drop-down menu. Another option is to allow only our friends to see tag suggestions of us.

Step 8: Click Close and confirm once if No One appears next to the question.

New Method To Disable Facial Recognition Feature

In order to prevent the social media network companies to collect user data, two professors from the University of Toronto – Parham Aarabi and Avishek Bose has come up with two algorithms – Aarabi and Bose. The algorithm dynamically disrupts the facial recognition feature. The technology developed by them uses a deep learning algorithm which exchanges data within themselves to improve both the algorithms. The first algorithm tries to recognize the faces and the second algorithm disrupts the facial data. They battle among themselves to improve the datasets generated. The disrupted image is just like the original feature with filters.

The functioning of the algorithm is so precise that it changes only the pixels which are unidentified by the naked eye. According to Bose, the algorithms are designed to work against each other. While one of them creates a robust facial recognition system, the other tries to disrupt it. At an IEEE International Workshop later this year on Multimedia Signal Processing, the team will present its study. Further, they are also trying to disrupt the image-based search algorithms developed by Google.
