China To Give 5G Coverage To All Prefecture Level Cities By 2020

China is one of the few countries along with South Korea and the United States to have made serious progress in rolling out 5G networks to paying users. But how far has it reached in this venture?

Although China is already working on its 6G technology, it hasn’t yet managed to provide 5G networks in all of its cities.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has made an announcement regarding this goal of giving the 5G network to all the prefecture-level cities.

The Ministry said, “We are planning to firmly develop the expansion of 5G and seek to cover all prefecture-level cities with 5G network by end of 2020.”

As per the data from the ministry, Chinese state carriers have already deployed a total of 126,000 5G base stations across the Asian country.

There was a surge in consumer demand when China approved the commercial usage of the 5G network in June. That triggered an acceleration in Industrial investment in the 5G field.

The three Chinese telcos China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom were expecting to operate nearly 130,000 5G base stations by the end of 2019.

China Unicom and China Telecom each had a target to install 40,000 5G sites by the end of 2019. China Mobile had announced to 50,000 5G sites for the same.

With the aim of reducing costs, China Telecom and China Unicom signed an agreement to together build a 5G mobile network in September 2019.

China Mobile, which is the world’s largest telco in terms of subscribers has claims to provide 5G network services to 50 cities across China already.

China Daily reports that China Mobile aims to end 2020 with 70 million 5G users with an investment of CNY20 billion. 

Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, and ZTE are the other companies that China is working with in order to achieve its goal of 5G network deployment. 

China Mobile has awarded half of its 5G network equipment contracts to Huawei Technologies, as per some previous reports of South China Morning Post.
