Volkswagen Hires 100 Sheep… And The Reason Is Surprisingly Smart

Volkswagen has begun using a flock of 100 sheep to manage vegetation beneath thousands of solar panels at its renewable energy facility in Poznań, Poland. The initiative replaces conventional mowing equipment with natural grazing, helping maintain the solar installation while reducing the need for machinery.

The sheep will remain at the site until autumn under the supervision of local breeders. According to the company, the project is designed to combine clean energy generation with sustainable land management. Volkswagen said the initiative also supports ongoing research into the coexistence of agriculture and renewable energy infrastructure.

Commenting on the project, Volkswagen Poznań Director Marzena Pillich-Grońska said, “Today, the photovoltaic farm delivers much more than green electricity. It has also become a place that supports biodiversity, local agriculture, and scientific research.”
