Polish Minister Says PM Modi Played Key Role in Preventing a Nuclear Escalation

During a press conference following the India-Poland Joint Economic Commission meeting in New Delhi, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski highlighted India’s unique diplomatic leverage in navigating highly volatile global conflicts. Bartoszewski endorsed New Delhi’s balanced approach to Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions, noting that both nations favor diplomatic solutions in crucial trade regions like the Gulf, from which India secures critical energy resources.

Turning to the ongoing conflict in Europe, Bartoszewski claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a pivotal role in dissuading Russian President Vladimir Putin from deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine in late 2022. Describing Modi as a highly respected global statesman, the Polish minister emphasized that Russia’s leadership actively respects counsel from New Delhi due to their deep-rooted historic ties.

Elaborating on this influence, Bartoszewski stated, “I mentioned the role Prime Minister Modi played in stopping Putin from using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine at the end of 2022. Prime Minister Modi is one of the few people who can actually exert some pressure and influence on President Putin, and that is clearly something India could do to help stop this conflict”.
