How to cope and move on after losing your job!

  • The job market has hit a time of crisis ever since the COVID-19 pandemic with millions of people losing their income globally.
  • The biggest giants such as Twitter, Meta, and now even Amazon have made massive layoffs in their workforce.
  • As companies continue to lose money they fire diligent workers to balance the sheets but such workers must learn how to move on.

Losing a job is a devastating feeling. There are no two ways about it. For those who are the sole breadwinners of their family, it’s almost like an earth-shattering feeling and for others, it’s still a very painful phenomenon.

There is nothing pleasant about losing one’s source of income. During the time of the pandemic, millions of people lost their jobs. Although the market has risen and recovered from the jolt of Covid-19, it’s still very unstable and vulnerable.

People continue to lose their jobs and companies continue to lay off their employees for better functioning. The most recent mass layoffs are those at giants like Twitter, Meta and now even Amazon is planning on laying off 10,000 workers.

Although it may seem like the end of the world, one has to learn how to deal with such a crisis. The bills or the credit card companies won’t stop sending their debt-filled notices according to the financial situation one finds himself in. The best way out of any tunnel or crisis is to accept and move on.

Owning and Accepting:

The first stage of any crisis is denial. Denial and passing the blame on. These are just temporary solutions and push us further away from bettering the situation. By not accepting what has happened, one only digs a bigger hole for himself and gets pushed into a deeper pit.

One should instead accept the situation. Whether you were fired or laid off, whether the company demanded more from you and you would have escaped the axe had you consistently been a top performer – such thoughts only pull us back and don’t let us move on.

Even if the situations were out of one’s control and external factors lead to this bad end one should always own the situation instead of blaming the situation and trying to escape from it.

Putting things into Perspective:

When one hits a major career crisis like losing one’s job, it’s easy and normal to feel left out and lost. One feels a loss of purpose and to become derailed in such a crisis is very normal.

But taking long walks or reading a book or building a new skill in this period can help one to calm down and as well as put things into perspective. Yes when bills pile up due to lack of pay, one will get stressed beyond measure.

But stressing over problems or sleeping with them on your mind won’t solve them. Instead, one can try and put things into perspective and try to take positives out of small things and can start his baby steps towards a new future.

Upgrading oneself:

The end of something always refers to the beginning of something new and maybe better. Instead of regretting losing a job, one should try to learn a new skill and upgrade oneself.

This is a well-known fact that during a job the pressure of completing deadlines and finishing tasks doesn’t give a person sufficient time to learn a new skill. One becomes stagnant with respect to one’s skill set due to the pressure of the routine.

This period becomes an ideal opportunity to learn a new skill such as a new coding language, or any relevant subject which can also be beneficial while pursuing a new job.

In today’s world of online education, all one needs is a click to log in to a new course and learn a new skill. In fact, many of these online platforms even come with financial aid and placement support. This period could really serve as a trampoline to jump and reach better and greater heights if one can utilize his time judiciously.
