Cupertino: Apple’s Home City Might Get Hyperloop Soon

Apple has built their huge spaceship campus in the town of Cupertino. Recently Cupertino’s Mayor Barry Chang said that “We are trying to bring in Hyperloop in our city. If this happens, it will only take people to travel 5 mins instead of the two-hour journey they have to make between DeAnza college and San Jose”. Recently Cupertino decided that they will be charging medium and large-scale companies based on their employees. The charges were set for improving the public transport facilities within the city. The tax would charge the companies having more than 99 employees, $124 per every employee.

Since Apple has their headquarter located in Cupertino and housing nearly 25,000 employees they might have to pay $9.4 million annually. Previously Apple used to pay $17,000 but with the new taxation policy might cause them a fortune.

Cupertino In Talks For Hyperloop

Apple was resisting the new tax policy from being implemented but it was suspended due to other reasons. Interestingly, Cupertino is in talks with Tesla for making the Hyperloop in their city. Darcy Paul, Mayor of Cupertino said that “It is in discussion phase only. We need to see what options we have to explore it. Personally, I will be happy if we get to implement it and make it for the public. It will be a cost-effective idea and also a forward approach to solving the problems. Our people are more interested in making this a possibility. We are sitting down with our stakeholders to understand it and get more thoughts and feedback on the idea of making it. We have to see all the possibilities and then turn up with a solution”.

Recently, Paul and other members talked with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) for setting up the Hyperloop in their city. However, nothing has been finalized yet. They are still discussing the possibilities of having the hyperloop being set up in their city.

Verdict

Cupertino has been facing a lot of traffic woes in the last few months. And this is probably going to continue in the near future also. The new tax policy has been terminated by Apple successfully at least till 2020. In an interview, Apple has openly opposed the policy suggested by the city department. But, Cupertino has to come up with some ideas to tackle their traffic issue. Even if the hyperloop deal is made and the project is started, it will take a lot of time to complete it and hence they do not have any solution for the near future.
