Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly reduced the size of his official convoy, signalling a broader push toward fuel conservation and administrative austerity. Recent visuals from Delhi showed the Prime Minister travelling in a two-vehicle convoy comprising a Range Rover and a Toyota Fortuner, a marked shift from the conventional 12 to 15-vehicle formation typically associated with VVIP movement.
Officials indicated that the revised arrangement is being implemented within the mandatory security framework set out in the Special Protection Group protocols and the Blue Book. There has been no dilution of prescribed safeguards, sources said, adding that operational refinements are being worked out to ensure compliance.
The streamlined convoy was also observed during recent visits to Gujarat, Assam, and Hyderabad. During his Hyderabad address, the Prime Minister urged citizens to cut down on fuel and gold consumption, a message officials interpret as a call for institutional restraint across government departments.
An official stated, “There are talks across departments for identifying all steps that can reduce fuel consumption. The message of the PM is for all, including us.”
The issue was discussed at an informal ministers’ meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has similarly reduced his convoy to two vehicles.
