In a move aimed at enhancing financial cooperation, India has introduced the RuPay card in the Maldives, further strengthening the growing economic partnership between the two nations. This development comes as part of wide-ranging bilateral discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu during the latter’s four-day state visit to India.

This visit, President Muizzu’s first since taking office in November last year, marks a turning point in Indo-Maldivian relations, which had experienced some strain in recent years due to political differences. Notably, Muizzu had previously held an anti-India stance. However, the current diplomatic reset focuses on expanding cooperation in key areas such as economic development, financial collaboration, and maritime security.

The introduction of the RuPay card is seen as a significant step toward boosting tourism and trade between the two countries by facilitating seamless financial transactions for Indian tourists and businesses operating in the Maldives. The card’s rollout is expected to improve convenience for travelers, stimulate economic exchanges, and deepen commercial ties.

President Muizzu, expressing his gratitude for India’s warm reception, stated, “PM Modi and I held extensive discussions on our successful development journey and laid out a comprehensive vision for future collaboration. We agreed on a roadmap that focuses on a strengthened economic and maritime security partnership.”

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ growth. “India is the closest neighbour and friend of the Maldives, and the Maldives holds an important place in our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘SAGAR’ Vision,” he said.

The leaders also signed a vision document outlining the future course of bilateral relations, with a particular focus on economic cooperation and maritime security, underscoring India’s pivotal role in supporting the Maldives’ strategic and economic development.
