At its annual Google I/O Connect India 2026 summit, Google announced a massive educational expansion aimed at bolstering the country’s advanced technical workforce. Developed by Google DeepMind, the newly launched “AI Research Foundations” curriculum is a free 56-hour online course tailored to university students and developers with a foundational knowledge of Python. Rather than focusing solely on basic artificial intelligence literacy, the curriculum guides participants through neural-network design, language data representation, and the process of building and fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) from the ground up.
The program is hosted on the Google Skills platform, where graduates earn official certificates and Google Cloud Skill badges upon completion. To scale the resource across national academic networks, Google has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and NASSCOM, which will integrate the lessons into its FutureSkills Prime portal. Additionally, social investor network AVPN is assisting with local deployment using resources from the Google.org APAC AI Opportunity Fund. The joint initiative aims to provide highly specialized, research-backed training to emerging technical specialists, equipping them to innovate directly with frontier generative technologies as domestic institutions expand. By removing cost barriers to advanced model architecture, the program aims to establish an India-originated workforce that can successfully deploy and fine-tune complex systems in an increasingly automated economy.
