Cobras On The Loose! Floodwaters Wash Hundreds Of Snakes Into Residential Areas

Torrential rainfall and subsequent reservoir breaches triggered by Typhoon Maysak have caused severe flooding across the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, resulting in an unusual public safety emergency. The inundation structurally compromised several low-lying commercial reptile facilities in Dengwei village, near Hengzhou, allowing an estimated 800 to 900 snakes to escape into surrounding residential quarters, agricultural plots, and muddy waterways.

Local administrative officials confirmed that the escaped wildlife includes a mix of non-venomous water snakes and king ratsnakes alongside highly dangerous cobras. The crisis has disrupted a major regional hub for commercial snake cultivation that serves pharmaceutical, leather, and biotech supply chains. Emergency services have reported multiple injuries from snakebites, including one fatality, with high water levels initially impeding transport to localized medical facilities.

In response to the hazard, emergency response teams armed with containment tools have joined hands with volunteer units to conduct house-to-house retrieval operations. Healthcare authorities have established specialized medical fast-tracks at Hengzhou People’s Hospital and expanded regional antivenom stockpiles. Residents are urged to remain indoors, avoid walking through opaque floodwaters, and refrain from handling floating storm debris where displaced reptiles routinely seek dry shelter.
