The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra’s municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, with the ruling Mahayuti alliance registering a dominant performance across the state.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the BJP recorded its best-ever showing in local body polls, with 48 per cent of councillors elected on the party symbol. He said more than 3,300 BJP councillors were elected, while party candidates secured the post of president in 129 municipal councils. Mahayuti nominees won the municipal president’s post in around 75 per cent of the local bodies where elections were held.
Counting of votes for elections conducted in two phases across 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats began on Sunday.
Fadnavis attributed the results to the party’s organisational strength and the state government’s development agenda. “It is a team effort of the organisation and the government. We fought the elections on the development plank,” he said, adding that the campaign focused on governance, work done so far and future plans.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed the outcome, posting on X: “Maharashtra stands firmly with development! Grateful to the people of Maharashtra for blessing the BJP and Mahayuti in the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections. This reflects trust in our vision of people-centric development.” He also lauded BJP and Mahayuti workers for their grassroots efforts.
