BharatPe and Ashneer Grover Settle Dispute, Part Ways Completely

SUMMARY

  • BharatPe and Ashneer Grover have settled their legal dispute, ending his association with the company.
  • Grover’s shares will be transferred to the Resilient Growth Trust and managed by his family trust.
  • The settlement follows a probe into financial irregularities involving ₹81 crore, leading to multiple arrests in 2024.

BharatPe, on September 30, 2024, announced the conclusion of its legal dispute with former co-founder Ashneer Grover, marking the end of his association with the fintech unicorn. Under the settlement agreement, Grover will no longer hold any position or shares in BharatPe, effectively severing all ties with the company. The agreement includes the transfer of certain shares owned by Grover to the Resilient Growth Trust, a move aimed at benefiting the company. The remaining shares will be overseen by a family trust, ensuring Grover’s complete disconnection from BharatPe.

In a formal statement, BharatPe confirmed that both parties have agreed to drop the legal proceedings. The settlement follows a prolonged legal conflict that arose after allegations of financial misconduct against Grover and his family came to light. BharatPe had accused Grover, alongside his family members, of diverting funds from the company through fraudulent schemes between 2019 and 2021. These accusations included making illegal payments to fraudulent HR consultants, inflating vendor invoices, creating fake transactions to claim input-tax credits, and misappropriating company funds via bogus travel agencies.

One significant allegation involved Shwetank Jain, a family member, who was accused of forging invoices and destroying evidence to cover up the fraud. The financial investigation gained momentum following Grover’s dramatic exit from BharatPe in 2022. Madhuri Jain Grover, his wife and the former Head of Controls at the company, was also dismissed from her position during the fallout.

The legal proceedings took a significant turn in August 2024 when the Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) made its first arrest, detaining Amit Kumar Bansal, who was allegedly managing non-existent firms that had received ₹72 crore from BharatPe. In September 2024, another arrest was made in the case when Deepak Gupta, former Head of Procurement at Resilient Innovation, BharatPe’s parent company, was taken into custody. Gupta, married to the sister of Madhuri Grover, was allegedly involved in a larger ₹81 crore fraud at the company. The EOW had filed an FIR in May 2023, naming Ashneer Grover, Madhuri Jain Grover, Shwetank Jain, Suresh Jain, and Deepak Gupta as key accused in the investigation.

BharatPe had originally filed a criminal complaint in December 2022, leading to the arrests and subsequent developments that culminated in the settlement announced on September 30, 2024. The company’s move to settle the legal dispute is seen as a step towards putting the controversial chapter behind it and focusing on its future growth.
