A doctor from Uttar Pradesh has drawn widespread attention online after sharing the case of a 22-year-old woman who is pregnant with her sixth child despite already raising five children. The woman, originally from Rajasthan, reportedly married as a minor and has been giving birth almost every year since her teenage years.
Dr Pragya Tomar of Spandan Hospital in Baraut shared details of the case in a video posted on Instagram after receiving consent from the couple. According to the doctor, the woman visited the hospital complaining of dizziness, weakness, and breathlessness while being five months pregnant.
During the interaction, the couple said they continued having children because they wanted another son. The family currently has four daughters and one son. “I keep having girls… we have one boy, we need another boy,” the woman said. Her husband added, “What will we do with one boy? What will we earn and how will we provide for the family?”
The doctor warned the couple about the health risks associated with repeated pregnancies and the lack of spacing between childbirths. She also highlighted concerns surrounding child marriage, limited awareness about contraception and financial hardship affecting maternal health in rural communities.
The video has since triggered wider debate online over gender preference, reproductive health awareness and access to family planning services.
