Over 97 lakh names have been removed from Tamil Nadu’s draft electoral roll released on Friday following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), according to data shared by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.
Official figures show that a majority of deletions were due to migration, with 66.4 lakh electors marked as having shifted out of their registered constituencies. Another 26.9 lakh names were removed after being identified as deceased, while 3.98 lakh voters were deleted for being enrolled at multiple locations. The revision exercise is part of a nationwide effort led by the Election Commission of India to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls.
The CEO’s office said enumeration forms have been collected from 5.43 crore voters, accounting for 84.81% of the state’s total electorate. As of December 19, 2025, “out of 6,41,14,587 electors, 5,43,76,755 electors have submitted their Enumeration Forms, reflecting overwhelming participation in the first phase of SIR,” the statement noted.
Authorities have clarified that eligible voters whose names were deleted can seek correction. The claims and objections window will remain open from December 19, 2025, to January 18, 2026, during which genuine electors can be added back to the rolls.
Tamil Nadu’s draft roll was released days after similar lists were published for several other states and Union Territories as part of the ongoing revision process.
