Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts that AI will surpass human intelligence By 2026

During an interview on Monday, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, made some daring predictions, stating that artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially surpass the intelligence of the smartest human by next year or the year 2026. Despite encountering several technological challenges, Musk discussed a variety of topics on X spaces, including the limitations of AI due to the availability of electricity.

In an interview with Nicolai Tangen, the CEO of Norway’s wealth fund, Musk provided updates on the development of Grok, an AI chatbot created by his xAI company. He stated that the upcoming iteration of Grok is expected to undergo training by May, but also acknowledged the difficulties caused by a limited supply of advanced chips.

Elon Musk, the co-founder of OpenAI, recently voiced his worries about the divergence of OpenAI from its initial objectives. In response, he established xAI last year as a competitor to OpenAI, which he has taken legal action against for supposedly prioritizing financial gain over the advancement of artificial intelligence for the betterment of humanity.

According to the Tesla CEO, the process of training the Grok 2 model involved the use of approximately 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. He also mentioned that future versions of the model would require even more chips, with an estimated demand of up to 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. He also highlighted that, in addition to chip shortages, the availability of electricity would play a crucial role in the development of AI in the next few years.

Switching focus to the automotive sector, Musk commended Chinese car manufacturers and referred to them as the top competitors on a global scale. He restated his previous concerns about Chinese counterparts surpassing international rivals, unless trade barriers are enforced.

In regards to recent labor concerns, Musk discussed a strike by a union in Sweden against Tesla and stated that the situation had gotten better. He noted that talks had occurred between Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, a significant shareholder of Tesla, and the company’s leadership regarding recent events.

According to Musk, the comments provide insight into the state of AI advancement and the obstacles encountered by both the tech and car sectors.
