The main aim of all these tests was to examine the nation’s own internet infrastructure, the RuNet. It could be functional, but can it run without the help of the global DNS?

Yes, with the idea of transferring the nation’s data traffic internally. The RuNet became the world’s biggest nation holding Intranet.

The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, Alexei Sokolov said, “It turned out that, in general, that both authorities and telecom operators are ready to effectively respond to possible risks and threats and ensure the functioning of the Internet and the unified telecommunication networks in Russia.”

He said the same in a press conference confirming the experiment’s success. He also mentioned that President Putin will confirm its results of the tests in the year 2020.

Years of planning, brainstorming and a bundle of ideas; and Russia now has his own re-routed Intranet. It stands as a shield for the domestic users but also abides their freedom of speech.

Without support from the Russian Law and physical modifications in its local internet infrastructure, this wouldn’t have been possible.

The tests were planned for April this year but were delayed until this Autumn. It was so because Kremlin required more time to pass the crucial law for the same.

But what is the law called? “Internet Sovereignty” law. It provides the Russian Government with the power to disconnect the country’s data intervention in the world wide web.

On the grounds of “national security,” the country’s government can make the decision any time any moment they want to.

But to do this, the law makes it mandatory that all local internet service providers re-route all internet traffic. But where do they divert?

Well, the Russian Communications Ministry should receive all the data from the chokepoints. These chokepoints can serve as a huge step for Russia backing up from the world wide database.

But at the same time creating a world tension crisis as it’ll be a hyper surveillance monitor and privacy based. It’ll be tough to know the nation’s intentions through internet protocols.

Privacy advocates from the world are raising objections against this new movement and are comparing it to the Great Firewall Technology from China.

Conclusion

Be it bad or good, it has created the country’s new benchmark. The world knows Russia as an independent web user, with the co-operation of the domestic ISP’s.

The unplugged Internet may be harnessing the people of the nation’s privacy and freedom of speech, but also creates a safe space and protection from the dark web.
