Last year, Google launched the Picture In Picture (PiP) mode for YouTube and other similar applications. It allows the users to play videos in an overlay window which is not affected by other apps. While this feature benefitted the bigger screen smartphones it was still an issue with the smaller displays. Moreover, it is available only for Android Oreo users. To use this feature, open Chrome and go to a website containing a video and play it in full screen. Press the Home button and the video will automatically start playing in PiP mode.

Other ways out of this are to install some third-party applications which enable the users to use the Picture in Picture mode without being on Android Oreo. But, not many want to install side applications to find a solution to the problems they face.

How To Play YouTube Videos In Background Without Any App

YouTube has a workaround through which you can play the videos in the background while doing other tasks on your smartphones. It will not be as convenient as YouTube Red but it still helps! You can make it happen using the desktop mode of the Chrome browser on your smartphones.

Follow the steps below to run YouTube in the background

  1. Head to http://www.youtube.com in your Chrome Browser from your smartphone.
  2. Select the “Desktop Site” mode from the three-dot menu available on the top right corner.
  3. After the site reloads, play the video you prefer.
  4. Press the Home button and as usual, the video will stop playing.
  5. Pull up the Control Center in iOs or pull down the Notifications Panel in Android and press the play button
  6. Done! The YouTube video will start playing the background and you can do other tasks while listening to your favorite songs.

The trick is not Chrome specific and can be used in any browser which allows you to run the Desktop version of any site. And moreover, it works even when the screen is turned off and thus you can use it as your music player too!
