Facebook Is Developing Brain-reading Computer

Brain-reading computers have become a field of interest for some great entrepreneurs. Last month, Elon Musk had announced about his Neuralink project. However, he isn’t alone. Facebook is also walking in the same direction. Zuckerberg is also getting closer to making their brain-reading computer a reality. Certainly, Facebook doesn’t lack in innovation. Facebook was also in the breaking news for its AI Poker bot which beat pro poker players.

In the developer conference 2017, Facebook had introduced to its new idea. According to facebook, they are outlining their goal to build a non-invasive, wearable electronic device that lets people type by simply imagining talking. Besides, we’ve been supporting a team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco who are working to help patients with neurological damage speak again by simply detecting intended speech from the brain.

Ongoing research

Reality Labs is the division of Facebook that studies long-term tech products and hardware. It has been working with researchers from the University of “California, San Francisco on the same technology of Brain-reading computer. Furthermore, a study published on Tuesday in the journal “Nature Communications” explains how researchers were able to use the brain-computer interface to read speech directly from the brain onto a screen.

Researchers at the University of California worked with three patients who are being treated for epilepsy. They had electrodes implanted into their brains. Consequently, researchers will spend the year testing the technology on them. Furthermore, the researchers say the findings could help develop a communication device for the other patients as well, who can no longer speak after severe brain injuries or brainstem stroke or any spinal cord injury. These trials will be also helpful for the development of facebook’s brain-reading computer.

Facebook vice president of AR/VR, Andrew Bosworth Shared an update on their work to build a non-invasive wearable device that lets people type just by imagining what they want to say.  He also added, their progress shows real potential in how future inputs and interactions with AR glasses could one day look.

But the brain-reading computer of Facebook is still under development. As a result, it is slow, bulky as well as unreliable. Consequently, the device won’t be commercialized very soon at all.
