Increasing internet penetration and digital literacy have led to the valuation of the Indian EduTech market reaching $5.13 billion in 2023. According to estimations, this industry is expected to grow to 10.4 billion by 2025.
Reports expect that the EduTech market of India will grow at a CAGR of more than 19% from 2023 to 2038 since this industry’s total market opportunity is predicted to increase by 73.88% from $180 billion in 2020 to $313 billion in 2030.
According to the market intelligence platform Tracxn, funding in this industry substantially reduced in 2023 to about $712 million, compared to $2.9 billion in 2022.
Even though, over 600 EduTech startups are present in this industry with about 37 million paid users, some major players such as Unacademy, Byju’s, Physics Wallah, and Allen dominate the sector.

Established in 2011, Byju’s has a valuation of $120 million as of June 2024. On the other hand, established by Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, Roman Saini, and Sumit Jain, Unacademy is valued at $3.44 billion as per the reports of March 2022.
As of February 2023, EduTech giant Physics Wallah’s worth was estimated at $1.09 billion while Allen’s market valuation currently stands at $1.8 billion.
Now as we concentrate on the operational revenue of these companies, numbers reveal important insights into their financial performance and market positioning.
The EduTech startup Byju’s based out of Bangalore, Generated Rs.5298Cr. in FY22 as its operational revenue, which spiked by 118% from Rs.2428Cr. in FY21. Unfortunately, during the same time, the firm’s net loss increased more than twofold to Rs.8245Cr. from Rs.4564Cr. in the previous financial year.
Incorporated in 2015, the online educational platform Unacademy‘s revenue stood at Rs.907Cr. in FY23, soaring by 26% from Rs.719Cr. in FY22. The startup’s net loss narrowed to Rs.1678Cr. in FY23 compared to Rs.1678.15Cr. in FY22.
Formed by Alakh Pandey in 2016, Physics Wallah witnessed a 234.4% surge in revenue from Rs.233Cr. in FY22 to Rs.779.3Cr. in FY23, while reporting a net profit of Rs.8.9Cr. in FY23 which significantly reduced from Rs.98.2Cr. in FY22.
Established by Brajesh Maheshwari, Rajesh Maheshwari, Allen Career Institute recorded revenue of Rs.2277Cr. in FY23 while achieving a net profit of Rs.429Cr. in the same financial year.
Founded in 2011, renowned education and learning app Byju’s, once valued at $22 billion, experienced a 75% drop in stock price and valuation during 2023. As per reports, the startup deviated from its primary aim of providing high-quality education. Instead, it focused on selling hardware items to students and parents through fraudulent sales techniques.
On 22nd August 2024, the Supreme Court rejected Byju’s and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requests to delay a meeting of the Committee of Creditors (CoC). A three-judge panel led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud had previously paused a Nation Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ruling that allowed Byju’s to pay Rs.158Cr. to the BCCI as a settlement.
On another note, social media users noted the irony of the moment when the CEO of Unacademy, Gaurav Munjal, wearing a $400 Burberry T-shirt, appeared at the company’s virtual town hall in July 2024, to announce that the employees would not receive any appraisal this year.
In the meantime, EduTech unicorn Physics Wallah in August 2024, launched PW School of Startups, aiming to provide striving entrepreneurs with cost-effective programs, mentorship, training, and access to capital.
