Silicon Valley venture capital giant General Catalyst has made its debut in Saudi Arabia’s startup ecosystem, leading a $67.5 million Series B funding round in Riyadh-based Lean Technologies. This investment underscores General Catalyst’s growing interest in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) fintech market, where Lean is rapidly establishing itself as a leading infrastructure provider. The funding round also saw participation from prominent investors like Bain Capital Ventures and Stanley Druckenmiller’s Duquesne Family Office.
Lean Technologies, co-founded in 2019 by Hisham Al-Falih, Aditya Sarkar, and Ashu Gupta, specializes in delivering seamless, secure, real-time banking solutions across the MENA region. The platform’s robust API enables businesses to access bank account data and process instant account-to-account payments, a critical need in a region that is experiencing rapid digital transformation in financial services.
The fresh capital infusion will fuel Lean’s strategic ambitions to solidify its presence in the MENA region, where it has become a critical player in fintech infrastructure. In addition to strengthening its regional standing, Lean is eyeing significant expansion into India. Lean has already registered an entity in India, with Co-founder and CTO Ashu Gupta serving as the director. Lean intends to hire senior engineering, operations, and product talent to support this expansion, which aligns with its goal of building a more global footprint.
With this latest round, Lean’s total funding now exceeds $100 million, underscoring investor confidence in its potential to shape the future of digital payments and open banking in MENA and beyond.
