Zomato Launched Weather Union to Provide Real-Time Hyperlocal Weather Information

Zomato, the leading food delivery and restaurant aggregator platform, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative called ‘Weather Union’ on Wednesday, aimed at delivering hyperlocal real-time weather updates to users.

This innovative service offers detailed information on key weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall, enhancing user experience and aiding various sectors in optimizing operations.

The Weather Union service, currently operational in 45 cities across India, leverages data from more than 650 on-ground weather stations strategically positioned nationwide.

These solar-powered weather stations, resembling traditional lamp posts, are installed at various premises, including those of Zomato employees. Additionally, individuals interested in hosting these weather stations can sign up on the company’s website to contribute to the network’s expansion.

Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, highlighted the potential of this rich weather data in unlocking various use cases for enterprises and research institutes. “Having already collaborated with CAS – IIT Delhi, we expect more institutions and companies to benefit from this and contribute to the greater good of our economy,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Goyal emphasized Zomato’s commitment to public welfare by offering Weather Union data for free, via an API, to all institutions and companies across the country.

He encouraged the utilization of real-time weather information to enhance productivity and efficiency across multiple sectors, including ride-hailing, e-commerce, logistics, and real estate.

While API access remains complimentary, Zomato acknowledges that the server costs associated with enterprise API usage can be substantial. Consequently, the company may introduce nominal charges for continued API usage by enterprises.

In addition to Weather Union, Zomato continues to innovate and experiment with new product features to enhance user experience and streamline operations.

Recent initiatives include trials of last-mile delivery services tailored for office-goers and the introduction of an all-electric fleet to accommodate large orders for gatherings.

With Weather Union, Zomato reaffirms its commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of society while striving to revolutionize the food delivery and services industry. As the service expands to more cities and sectors, it is poised to play a pivotal role in driving efficiency and resilience across various domains.
