  • A dedicated Open Source Funding Office (OSFO) will manage the initiative.

Stockbroking platform Zerodha has launched a $1 million annual fund aimed at supporting Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FOSS/FLOSS) projects worldwide. The initiative, announced by Zerodha’s CTO Kailash Nadh, reflects the company’s longstanding commitment to open-source technologies, which have played a pivotal role in developing their financial technology products and services.

Zerodha plans to invest between $10,000 and $100,000 in individual projects each year. Nadh emphasized that this fund is a structured initiative and could potentially grow beyond $1 million once the company gains further insights into managing the fund.

To ensure the smooth operation of the fund, Zerodha will set up a dedicated team akin to an OSPO (Open Source Program Office), focusing exclusively on funding open-source initiatives. This Open Source Funding Office (OSFO) will manage the distribution of financial assistance in a non-ad hoc manner.

FOSS refers to software that is free to use, modify, and distribute, with prominent examples including Linux, Mozilla Firefox, and LibreOffice. This model encourages collaboration, transparency, and community-driven development.
