This New Indian Game Takes Players Back To The Chola Empire

A new action-adventure video game set during the Chola era has been officially unveiled, bringing one of South India’s most influential historical periods to modern gaming platforms. Developed by Chennai-based Ayelet Studio, Son of Thanjai is set in an alternate-history version of the 11th-century Chola Empire and is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

The game follows Vinnendiran, a 19-year-old Chola prince who loses his family, throne and status before embarking on a journey through a kingdom grappling with invasion, famine and political turmoil. Rather than focusing solely on reclaiming power, the narrative explores his transformation as he encounters ordinary people across the empire.

Introducing the project, the studio said, “I grew up hearing stories about the Chola dynasty, an empire that ruled South India for over four centuries and built trade networks that reached China and Rome. But I never saw that world in a game. Not once. That’s why we’re building Son of Thanjai.”

A key gameplay feature is the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip-like sword rooted in South Indian martial traditions. Developers have also drawn inspiration from Kalaripayattu, emphasizing movement, timing and tactical combat. The open world includes forests, river plains, coastal settlements and trading centres influenced by the ancient Tamil concept of Tinai, while incorporating cultural elements such as Therukoothu performances and traditional occupations.
