The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a comprehensive initiative to assess the digital transformation readiness of India’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through a baseline survey focused on Industry 4.0 and 5G technologies.
The DoT has invited proposals from organizations and startups to develop and execute this survey, aiming to identify areas for improvement and prioritize investments in digital infrastructure.
The survey is designed to evaluate the current state of Industry 4.0 adoption within the manufacturing sector, particularly among MSMEs, and to pinpoint the challenges these enterprises face in leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing.
Led by the Telecom Centre of Excellence India, a public-private partnership initiative, this effort seeks to understand the obstacles MSMEs encounter in integrating Industry 4.0 solutions. “The survey should aim to lay the groundwork for a robust ecosystem capable of capitalizing on the capabilities offered by 5G and 6G networks,” the DoT stated. “This includes identifying sector-specific needs in at least 10 sectors and preferences, recognizing the diverse landscape of MSMEs, and providing targeted support to foster innovation and competitiveness.”
Over a 60-day period, the survey will cover five sectors each in the northern and southern regions of India. The aim is to address immediate barriers to digital transformation and pave the way for a cyber-physical system through the seamless integration of sensors using 5G and 6G technologies. This approach is expected to drive sustainable growth and enhance the competitive positioning of MSMEs across various sectors.
The survey’s findings will form the basis for key policy recommendations, targeting the transformative adoption of Industry 4.0. These recommendations will support the MSME sector in improving efficiency, productivity, and strategic competitiveness, ultimately aiding in its survival and growth in an increasingly digital landscape.
The DoT’s initiative underscores the importance of digital evolution in the manufacturing industry, especially for MSMEs. By focusing on the integration of AI, IoT, cloud computing, and next-generation networks, the survey aims to create a supportive ecosystem that fosters innovation and positions Indian MSMEs at the forefront of the global market.
