Apple is set to announce a groundbreaking deal with Google to integrate Google’s Gemini AI into its devices this fall, likely during the anticipated September iPhone launch event. This development, reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, follows Apple’s previous announcement at WWDC about bringing ChatGPT to iPhones and other devices.
Mark Gurman notes that Apple has been in discussions with multiple AI companies, including Anthropic. However, the deal with Google’s Gemini AI is expected to be unveiled first, providing Apple users with a broader range of AI assistant options. This will complement the already announced ChatGPT integration and Apple’s proprietary AI features.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, had hinted at the possibility of a Google partnership shortly after Apple’s recent keynote presentation. Apple, however, decided against a partnership with Meta due to concerns about the quality of its Llama chatbot.
In addition to third-party AI integrations, Apple is preparing to launch its own AI system, Apple Intelligence, in beta form this fall. Initially, this feature will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. Gurman suggests that Apple may eventually monetize these AI capabilities through subscription-only features.
The partnerships with third-party AI services are expected to provide immediate benefits to Apple. The company will receive a share of in-app purchases when users subscribe to AI chatbot services via Apple devices. Moreover, the integration of Apple Intelligence aims to boost revenue and incentivize consumers to upgrade to the latest iPhone models.
