To end the current strike at the company’s facility in Sriperumbudur, close to Chennai, Samsung India and a group of workers have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). In response to the difficulties encountered by the workforce, Samsung India has agreed meet to their demands.
The Tamil Nadu administration received a request from the Union Government last month to resolve the strike as soon as possible. Since September 9, workers at Samsung Electronics have staged protests outside the facility, calling for the association to be recognized. Despite repeated pleas, the firm has not done so yet.
As per ET, the corporation stated that it would prioritize putting several initiatives into place to enhance the working environment for the welfare of its employees. In the Memorandum of Agreement that ET examined, the corporation said, “This special incentive shall be considered with the annual increment in wages for the year 2025-26, which will be finalized in consultation with the workmen committee during the wage negotiations.”
In order to improve pay competitiveness, Samsung will also hold ongoing discussions with a workers’ committee. In addition, from October 2024 to March 2025, the corporation will provide a temporary special incentive worth ₹5,000 per month, which it calls the productivity stabilization incentive.
The firm further states, “In the unfortunate event of the death of an employee while in service, the company shall provide an additional immediate assistance of ₹1 Lakh to the family to take care of their immediate needs.”
Additionally, by the next year, the business plans to run air-conditioned buses on all 108 lines instead of just the present five. Furthermore, it will boost the frequency of workmen’s family invitation events from four to six times a year and provide each attending family with a present valued at ₹2,000. The corporation will also modernize break rooms, restrooms, and locker rooms in addition to opening a new medical room and expanding meal allowances. Along with adding more vacation days, installing canopies between buildings, and giving employees a 2,000 Indian rupee gift card upon the birth of a child, these initiatives are also planned.
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), however, has reported that the 29-day strike will go on since the Tamil Nadu government’s negotiations with Samsung management representatives and the striking workers at its Sunguvarchatiram plant resulted in no agreement.
