Pixxel Plans to Launch Six Satellites Using ISRO and SpaceX Rockets in 2024

Bengaluru-based space technology startup Pixxel is set to launch six satellites in 2024, utilizing rockets from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, CEO Awais Ahmed confirmed.

Pixxel aims to address the needs of various industries such as agriculture, energy, forestry, and environmental monitoring with its hyperspectral imagery satellites. These satellites, as part of a larger constellation, will utilize hyperspectral imaging technology to analyze materials based on their unique light patterns.

Ahmed stated that the launch schedule depends on the readiness of Pixxel’s satellites and the availability of launches from SpaceX and ISRO. While SpaceX’s Transporters are typically punctual, ISRO’s launch timelines are contingent on the primary satellite.

Pixxel has already launched three satellites, including the Shakuntala (Technology Demonstrator-2) satellite, using SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket in 2022. The company’s MegaPixxel facility, capable of producing 40 large satellites annually, is currently working on around nine satellites, with plans for additional launches in the near future.

Pixxel’s endeavors are part of a broader trend in the Indian space technology sector, with several startups gearing up for multiple launches in 2024. Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Digantara, Dhruva Space, among others, are also preparing for significant launches, as per the Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).

The space tech startup ecosystem in India is witnessing robust growth, buoyed by government support and increased investor interest, aiming to capitalize on the projected $44 billion industry by 2033.
