Ola Ordered to Offer Refund Options, Address 2,061 Consumer Complaints

SUMMARY

  • The CCPA received 2,061 complaints against Ola between January and October 2024, mostly related to overcharging and refund delays.
  • Ola is now required to offer customers direct refunds or coupon options and provide receipts for Auto rides.
  • The ride-hailing platform has updated its policies to enhance transparency and introduced faster payment cycles for drivers.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed ride-hailing giant Ola to introduce significant changes to its platform following an influx of complaints from consumers. Between January and October 2024, the CCPA received 2,061 complaints against Ola, primarily related to overcharging and delays in processing refunds.

In response to these complaints, the CCPA has ordered Ola to offer customers a choice in refund methods, moving away from its current policy of only issuing coupon codes for future rides. Going forward, consumers will be able to choose between receiving a direct refund to their bank accounts or opting for a coupon.

Additionally, Ola has been instructed to provide a bill, receipt, or invoice for all Auto rides booked through its platform. The CCPA labeled the absence of receipts as an “unfair trade practice” under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, emphasizing that all customers should have access to transparent fare details. In a statement, the consumer watchdog noted, “The no-question-asked refund policy cannot be misused to force consumers into taking additional rides.”

Ola has already begun implementing these changes. Its platform now prominently displays the contact information for grievance and nodal officers, as well as clearly outlining cancellation policies and applicable fees at the time of booking. To improve transparency, fare component breakdowns are also now provided before confirming any ride.

In addition, Ola has revised its payment cycles for drivers, aiming to ensure faster payments and improved service standards. These changes mark a significant shift in how Ola manages customer service and operational transparency.
