A six-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her mother in Navi Mumbai’s Kalamboli area, with police stating that the crime was linked to the child’s inability to speak Marathi fluently and the woman’s longstanding resentment over having a daughter, according to reports by NDTV and Moneycontrol.
The incident came to light on Tuesday after the woman initially claimed the child had died of a heart attack. Police grew suspicious and ordered a detailed post-mortem, which revealed signs of airway obstruction. Following sustained questioning lasting several hours, the woman allegedly confessed to strangling the child.
Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kote said the accused had repeatedly expressed frustration over the girl’s speech difficulties. Officials stated that the child primarily spoke Hindi and struggled with Marathi, which reportedly triggered frequent arguments at home. “I don’t want such a child; she doesn’t speak properly,” the woman allegedly told her husband on multiple occasions.
Investigators also revealed that the woman had been unhappy about giving birth to a daughter and had expressed a desire for a son. She was reportedly undergoing psychiatric treatment at the time of the incident.
The child’s grandmother had visited the house earlier that day but left without seeing her. Later, when the father returned home, he found the girl unresponsive and rushed her to hospital, where she was declared dead.
The accused, a science graduate married to an IT engineer since 2017, has been arrested. Police said further investigation is ongoing.
