Meta’s AI Chief Just Called Elon Musk’s xAI A ‘Failure’

Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun has delivered a blunt assessment of Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI. Speaking during an interview with CNBC, the AI pioneer labeled the company a “failure” and expressed strong skepticism regarding its capacity to rival frontrunners like OpenAI and Anthropic. LeCun attributed the venture’s struggles heavily to an exodus of talent, stating, “XAI is kind of a failure, frankly, because the founding team has” departed.

LeCun further asserted that Musk’s past management style has severely hindered his recruitment capabilities. “Elon is now in a position that is very, very difficult for him to kind of hire top people in AI, because he’s kind of, you know, not behaved in sort of very good ways toward the … previous team,” LeCun remarked. He added that xAI’s strategy of renting out excess data center capacity to outside firms indicates a scramble to offset heavy infrastructure expenses.

Despite losing senior members over the past year, Musk has aggressively expanded computing infrastructure, recently merging xAI with SpaceX in a deal valuing the combined business at approximately $1.25 trillion. Nevertheless, LeCun concluded, “I’m not very positive about the prospect of xAI,” warning of a broader industry correction driven by unsustainable AI expenditures.
