‘It Is Time to Go Back’: Sridhar Vembu Sparks Migration Debate

Sridhar Vembu, the founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, has initiated a significant public discourse by calling for a “reverse migration” from urban centers back to India’s rural heartlands. Expressing concern over the talent drain in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur region, Vembu noted that decades of migration for white-collar and overseas opportunities have left ancestral homes and historic temples abandoned. In a statement shared on X, he observed, “In the last 40 years, villages in Tanjavur district have lost a lot of talent, with abandoned houses and temples in so many places. It is time to go back.”

Vembu’s advocacy is supported by corporate action; Zoho is currently expanding its rural footprint with a new campus near Kumbakonam. The tech leader also highlighted his firm’s investment in Yali Aerospace, a drone startup based in Thanjavur, as a model for bringing high-tech innovation to smaller towns. “We are doing our part… A lot more has to happen,” he added, emphasizing that rural areas hold untapped potential for economic growth.

The proposal has divided opinion online, with some praising the vision for decentralized development while others cite challenges regarding rural infrastructure and healthcare. Despite the debate, the initiative marks a growing trend in the Indian tech sector to shift operations toward “Tier-2” and “Tier-3” locations to ensure sustainable regional development.
