To stop cybercrime, the Government told phone companies to block 28,200 phones and check 20 lakh phone numbers fast. They think these phones and numbers might be linked to bad online activities. This news came from an official statement on May 10th.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) worked with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and state police. They want to stop bad guys from using phones for crimes and fraud. They want to keep people safe online.
MHA and police found that 28,200 phones were used for cybercrimes. DoT checked more and found that 20 lakh phone numbers were connected to these phones. So, DoT quickly told phone companies to block these phones all over India. They also asked to re-check the 20 lakh phone connections. If they fail this check, their connection will be cut off.
DoT made a portal called Chakshu to help with telecom fraud. Since it started, they found and stopped 52 bad groups sending bad texts. They also blocked 348 phones across India and flagged 10,834 phone numbers for checks.
To stop cybercrimes, DoT also blocked 1.58 lakh unique phone IDs linked to crimes. They also stopped phone connections made with fake documents.
Till April 30th, DoT cut off 1.66 crore phone connections. They cut 30.14 lakh connections after getting feedback from users. They also cut 53.78 lakh connections because people bought too many SIM cards.
