India’s Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal announced that a comprehensive framework to enhance ecommerce exports is set to be finalized by September. This initiative is aimed at significantly increasing the country’s annual ecommerce exports from the current $5 billion to an ambitious $50-100 billion in the coming years.
Barthwal emphasized the need for a robust regulatory ecosystem, particularly concerning aspects such as taxation, to support this growth. “A good regulatory framework is crucial for the ecommerce export sector to thrive and reach its full potential,” he stated.
In 2022, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) set an even more ambitious target, aiming to facilitate $200-$300 billion in ecommerce exports from India by 2030. This goal highlights the immense potential and strategic importance of the ecommerce sector in driving India’s export growth.
The upcoming framework is expected to address various regulatory challenges and provide a conducive environment for ecommerce businesses to expand their export operations. This move aligns with the government’s broader vision of leveraging digital platforms to boost international trade and strengthen India’s position in the global market.
India’s ecommerce sector has been growing rapidly, driven by increasing internet penetration, digital payments, and a young, tech-savvy population. The new regulatory framework is anticipated to further accelerate this growth by making it easier for Indian businesses to reach and serve global customers.
The development of this framework is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support the digital economy and create new opportunities for Indian entrepreneurs. By addressing key regulatory issues and fostering a supportive ecosystem, the government aims to unlock the full potential of ecommerce exports and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
As the framework is rolled out, it is expected to provide clarity and stability for businesses, encouraging more players to enter the ecommerce export market and compete on a global scale. This initiative marks a significant step towards realizing India’s ecommerce export potential and establishing the country as a major player in the global digital economy.
