During a recent media interaction with Mirchi Plus, actor Vivek Oberoi disclosed how superstar Akshay Kumar provided vital professional support during a prolonged career slump. Following a highly publicized industry dispute in 2003, Oberoi faced widespread professional isolation and an unofficial boycott, leaving him without film offers despite receiving critical acclaim for roles in movies such as Omkara and Shootout at Lokhandwala.
To help him combat depression and rebuild his confidence, Kumar visited Oberoi’s residence and offered a practical solution by diverting his own live stage show bookings to him due to a busy filming schedule. Oberoi recalled Kumar’s gesture, stating, “‘You start doing them. Whatever inquiry is coming for me, I’ll send it to you’, he said.” This allowed Oberoi to return to the stage, interact with live audiences, and secure an independent income.
Reflecting on the systemic pressures within the entertainment sector, Oberoi noted that filmmakers frequently avoided casting him due to external influence, remembering how individuals told him, “Samajh ja yaar. Kaun pange lega? (Try to understand. Who would take a risk?)” He emphasized that instead of challenging industry factions, Kumar provided a tangible path forward.
