The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have jointly canceled over 1 crore mobile connections to combat fraudulent and bothersome callers. Over 2.27 lakh mobile phones were blacklisted by the telecom department due to their potential involvement in financial fraud and cybercrime as reported by Press Trust of India.
Sanchar Saathi has assisted in the removal of more than 1 crore fake cellphone connections till date. As per the TRAI’S official statement, 50 entities have been blacklisted, and over 3.5 lakh such numbers have been disconnected. Along with that around 3.5 lakh unnecessary and disputed SMS headers and 12 lakh content templates have also been blocked.
Following TRAI’s instructions, telecom carriers were said to have blacklisted 50 companies a few days ago for spamming end consumers. In response to its orders, the telecom regulator claimed at the time that telecom companies had removed over 2.75 lakh mobile numbers, telecom resources, and SIP DID (session initiation protocol and direct inward dialing). Also, the telecom regulator has been taking steps toward requiring name display during incoming calls, however, these are being delayed because of technological difficulties.
The official announcement further stated that as of October 1, TRAI’s updated quality of service guidelines and regulations will be in force. Furthermore, on April 1, 2025, monthly monitoring of mobile service performance and quality of service will begin in place of quarterly monitoring.
