A horrific road accident near the north portal of the Atal Tunnel resulted in the death of one tourist and left three others injured. The incident took place late Tuesday night when a speeding Mahindra Scorpio carrying four individuals veered off the mountainous road, crashed through roadside barricades, and plunged into the Chandra River before striking an under-construction bridge.
According to state authorities, the group was traveling from Manali to Lahaul when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle at around 10 pm due to high speed. The impact of the plunge left the SUV severely mangled on the unfinished concrete structure. The deceased passenger has been identified as 34-year-old Kailash, a resident of Sikar, Rajasthan. The three injured individuals—identified as Rajendra and the driver, Siddharth, both from Sikar, along with Aditya from Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh—are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Local police, fire department personnel, and administrative rescue teams executed a complex operation to extricate the victims from the trapped wreckage. Sissu Station House Officer Mukesh Rathour confirmed that the body of the deceased has been taken into custody for a post-mortem examination. Following the crash, authorities have strongly cautioned travelers to avoid nighttime transit and overspeeding in hilly terrains, particularly as ongoing monsoon showers compromise visibility and create slippery road conditions.
