Adani Group Set to Enter UPI, Digital Payments, and Credit Card Market

The Adani Group is poised to expand into the digital payments and e-commerce sectors, according to recent reports. This strategic move will see the conglomerate, led by Gautam Adani, competing directly with industry giants like Google and Reliance Industries, helmed by Mukesh Ambani.

The group plans to launch these new services on their consumer app, Adani One, which was introduced in 2022. The app will incorporate Unified Payments Interface (UPI) functionalities and offer a co-branded credit card, as previously announced. This development marks Adani Group’s foray into the burgeoning digital payments market in India.

Adani Group is reportedly considering applying for a license to operate on India’s public digital payments network, UPI. This will enable the conglomerate to provide a seamless digital payment experience for its customers. Additionally, the group is negotiating to offer online shopping through the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This strategic partnership with ONDC will allow Adani to bypass the need for investing in proprietary payment or e-commerce platforms, significantly reducing entry barriers and costs.

The group’s initial target audience will be the existing users of its various businesses, including gas and electricity customers, as well as travelers using its airports. Customers will have the opportunity to earn loyalty points through bill payments, which can then be redeemed for online shopping, thereby creating a comprehensive ecosystem of services and rewards.

“This expansion into digital payments and e-commerce aligns with our vision of leveraging technology to enhance consumer experience,a source close to the development stated. The new initiatives are expected to diversify Adani Group’s portfolio and strengthen its position in the digital market.

The move underscores Adani Group’s ambition to diversify its business operations and tap into the fast-growing digital economy. By integrating its services with UPI and ONDC, the group aims to offer a competitive alternative to existing players in the market, providing consumers with more choices and better service options.

As Adani Group prepares to roll out these new services, the digital payments and e-commerce landscape in India is set to witness increased competition, promising enhanced innovation and improved customer experiences.
