Zepto Valuation Soars to $5 Billion with $340 Million Fundraise

Zepto, the prominent quick commerce player, has successfully raised $340 million in its latest funding round, pushing its valuation to $5 billion. This investment round underscores the rapid growth of the quick commerce sector in India and Zepto’s significant role within it.

Initially targeting $400 million, Zepto capped the round at $340 million. General Catalyst led with a $250 million investment, marking its first major entry into the Indian market following its merger with Venture Highway. Mars Growth contributed $50 million, with the remaining funds coming from existing investors. The entire funding is allocated as primary capital, translating directly into equity for the investors.

General Catalyst, which is finalizing a $6 billion fund, plans to invest between $500 million and $1 billion in India over the next few years. Mars Growth, known for its investments in Indian startups like Zetwerk and Meesho, continues to support the Indian ecosystem.

Zepto’s valuation has surged from $1.4 billion in August 2023 to $3.6 billion by June 2024, and now to $5 billion. This rapid increase reflects the company’s strong market performance amidst fierce competition from rivals like Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart. The $340 million round brings Zepto’s total funding to over $1.6 billion, with $1 billion raised in just the past 50-60 days.

Founded by Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra, both 23, Zepto has quickly established itself in the quick commerce industry. The company’s hyperlocal model, utilizing micro-warehouses for swift deliveries, has resonated with consumers and driven substantial market share growth.

The quick commerce market in India is projected to expand by 35% to nearly $7 billion in gross merchandise value. Zepto’s rapid valuation growth and robust performance position it to capitalize on this expanding market.
