The UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially inscribed the ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath, located in Uttar Pradesh, on its World Heritage List during its 48th session in South Korea. The milestone marks India’s 45th property to secure the prestigious international status.
Welcoming the global designation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the inscription as “a proud moment for every Indian!” Expressing his appreciation, the Prime Minister stated: “A proud moment for every Indian! Delighted that Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh has been inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List. This recognition celebrates India’s profound civilisational and spiritual heritage. It will also inspire more people across the world to come to Sarnath and connect with the ideals of Lord Buddha.”
Situated approximately 10 kilometers from Varanasi, Sarnath holds monumental historical significance as the revered location where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also praised the recognition, emphasizing its role in showcasing India’s spiritual legacy. The successful inscription follows the formal dossier submitted by the Union Ministry of Culture for the 2025-26 nomination cycle.
