Relatives of a 42-year-old male patient named Akbar have demanded a comprehensive investigation into patient safety standards at Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital following an in-patient structural failure. On Saturday night around 9:30 PM, a ceiling fan in Ward 27 detached and struck the patient’s abdominal area while he was resting in bed. Eyewitnesses and ward attendants reported that the fan shaft fractured, causing the unit to fall directly onto the bed. Akbar passed away three hours later on Sunday afternoon, prompting allegations from family members regarding inadequate facility maintenance.
Responding to the allegations, GTB Hospital management released an official statement clarifying that the patient died due to his underlying medical conditions rather than physical impact from the fallen appliance. The hospital noted that the patient was admitted unconscious with uncontrolled hypertension, encephalopathy, stroke, and aspiration pneumonia with respiratory failure. Post-event clinical evaluations confirmed that “no signs of external injury were present” and “no major injury was sustained by any patient, attendant, or healthcare worker due to the incident.”
Public Works Department (PWD) teams subsequently replaced the unit. Hospital authorities acknowledged the fracture was “highly unusual and is not expected under normal operating conditions,” confirming an internal inquiry.
