India marked a significant milestone in its near-space technology sector after Hyderabad-based Red Balloon Aerospace successfully launched the country’s first indigenous super-pressure balloon carrying commercial payloads from multiple domestic and international partners.
The balloon, named VISTA, was launched from the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada and climbed to an altitude of nearly 25 kilometres. According to the company, the mission was designed to demonstrate India’s capability in developing super-pressure balloon technology, which allows high-altitude platforms to remain airborne for extended durations.
Super-pressure balloons are engineered to maintain internal pressure higher than the surrounding atmosphere, enabling them to carry scientific, commercial and communication payloads more efficiently than conventional weather balloons.
Speaking after the launch, Red Balloon Aerospace co-founder and CEO CVS Kiran said, “The mission was launched to prove super-pressure balloon capability, which has never been done in India before. This involves proving the balloon’s design and the material.”
The balloon carried payloads from seven national and international partners, highlighting growing commercial interest in high-altitude aerospace systems. While the current mission is expected to remain airborne for nearly 24 hours, the company said its long-term objective is to build balloons capable of staying operational in the stratosphere for several months.
The development is being viewed as an important step for India’s expanding aerospace and space-technology ecosystem.
