On Wednesday, September 11, NXP CEO Kurt Sievers stated that the Dutch semiconductor design company will invest over $1 billion in India in the coming years. Speaking at SEMICON India 2024, Sievers predicted that the company will probably increase its research and development (R&D) activities with the help of the anticipated financial infusion.

Kurt Sievers stated, “NXP is committed to double its R&D efforts here in the country in the next few years, which is far more than a billion dollars.” He also adds that NXP is in discussions to broaden its partner base with Indian businesses in the automotive and other areas as well. He also emphasized that India’s optimistic outlook on semiconductor development will benefit other industries and the country will become a “powerful economy” in the upcoming years.

With four semiconductor design centers located in Noida, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune, the Dutch semiconductor manufacturer has been doing business in India for the past fifty years. It claims that India is one of its biggest R&D design centers, despite being present in more than 30 nations.

“We have some 3,000 employees and engineers. We have designed some of the most innovative semiconductor devices in the world. In India, the transformation I am seeing now is that for the future, we will not only work in India for the world, but we will also work in India for India,” stated Kurt Sievers as, as reported by Press Trust Of India.

The government has established a special reserve fund with an outlay of INR 1 lakh crore, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to promote innovation in the semiconductor and scientific and technology industries. The announcement of the second phase of the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which would concentrate on attracting specialized businesses such as component manufacturers and raw material suppliers to India, was made on the same day by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The PM informed a small group of semiconductor company CEOs and executives, that the government is aiming to lessen the burden of compliance and draw in more investment to the nation.

ISM, which was established in 2022, seeks to develop a thriving display and semiconductor ecosystem in the nation. Under the program, the government intends to directly support participants in the semiconductor ecosystem for ten years.
