Google Expands AI Overviews Feature to Six Countries, Including India

Google Search has announced that its AI Overviews feature will soon be available in six additional countries, including India, expanding its global presence after the feature’s launch in the US two months ago.

The AI Overviews feature, which offers users concise topic summaries drawn from various web sources, is now set to roll out in the UK, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil.

Google has also tailored the experience to include local language support in each region. In India, the feature will be accessible in both English and Hindi, with enhancements that were first introduced during Search Labs experiments.

Users will be able to switch seamlessly between English and Hindi search results using a language toggle button, and they will have the option to listen to AI-generated responses by tapping the “Listen” button, thanks to text-to-speech capabilities.

The AI Overviews will now feature a new right-hand link display for desktop users, which is also available on mobile by tapping site icons located on the upper right side of the screen. These updates will be implemented globally in all countries where AI Overviews have launched, including for Search Labs users in over 120 countries and territories.

Google’s phased rollout of AI Overviews across these new markets is expected to take place over the next several weeks. Testing in India has shown a higher rate of users listening to AI-generated responses compared to other regions.

According to Google, AI Overviews have led users to explore a wider range of websites, particularly when navigating more complex queries. Clicks originating from search result pages featuring AI Overviews have shown higher quality, with users spending more time on the websites they visit.

Additionally, Google is currently experimenting with integrating links to relevant web pages directly within the AI Overview text to make it easier for users to access supporting information.

Initial results from this experiment have been promising, as the inclusion of direct links has driven higher traffic to publisher sites. Google plans to continue testing various approaches to present information in ways that are both helpful to users and beneficial to content publishers, with a priority on methods that promote website traffic.
