India-focused venture capital firm Venture Highway (VH) is merging with Silicon Valley-based General Catalyst (GC) to form a formidable venture platform aimed at supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs in India.
Hemant Taneja, CEO of General Catalyst, announced the merger on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Combining our US seed team with Venture Highway in India and La Famiglia in Europe, we are committing deeply to becoming great at supporting the world’s best founders at the earliest stages. The combined capabilities of the two firms will allow us to be much more hands-on and effective going forward in India.”
Founded in 2014 by Neeraj Arora, former Chief Business Officer of WhatsApp and an angel investor in Indian startups, Venture Highway has provided early funding for companies such as Meesho, Moglix, MPL, ShareChat, BetterPlace, and Chalo. The collaboration between GC and VH has been years in the making, with Taneja and Arora building a relationship of deep trust and respect over the past seven years, driven by their shared interest in India.
General Catalyst has a notable track record, backing startups like CRED, Spinny, Orange Health, and Loop. The merger aims to enhance Indo-US-Europe collaboration in AI, technology, industry, and talent. The joint firm will also develop industry-specific incubation and partnership strategies to build large enterprises from India for the global market.
This strategic merger aligns with General Catalyst’s vision for the Indian startup ecosystem. Last year, Taneja highlighted that General Catalyst expects 10-20% of its new $4.6 billion fund to be allocated to Indian startups.
In a related development, Silicon Valley-based South Park Commons (SPC) recently announced the opening of its first international location in Bengaluru. SPC, a technical community and early-stage venture fund, has partnered with Flipkart’s co-founder Binny Bansal to expand into India.
The merger of General Catalyst and Venture Highway marks a significant step in amplifying venture capital support for Indian startups, leveraging the strengths of both firms to nurture and scale innovative enterprises in India.
