There are 2,101 billionaires in the world now – 40% up in five years

It can be pretty hard to believe that the billionaire population of the world is still increasing steadily, but it’s true according to a study. 

Here we are going to provide you all the important data of the Billionaire Insights report 2019, which will tell you who is ruling the world of billionaires. So read on!

Let’s start with a question- how many more billionaires this year? About 589. Yes, about 589 individual billionaires have increased in the last five years. The study was published in UBS’s 2019 Billionaire Insights Report. That means a rise of about 38.9% has been seen.

Now, this was the individual wealth report. How about their combined wealth?

If we combine the wealth of these individuals, then we will see a growth of about 34.5%. In other words, their combined wealth has increased by more than a third to reach $8.5 trillion. This report covers the data from the years 2013 to 2018.

According to the Swiss Bank, the consistently rising billionaire wealth fell for the first time in five years during 2018. The reason for this dip was found to be “a strong USD, trade friction, fears of lower economic growth, and financial market volatility.”

The ‘Billionaire Effect’

The “Billionaires insights 2019” report analyzes the business excellence of different entrepreneurs’. According to their report, long term vision, smart risk-taking, business focus, and determination have resulted in the excellent performance of these businesses. 

Businesses controlled by billionaires outperform by a large margin. This has been called the ‘Billionaire Effect’ in the report.

And how was the performance of ladies? Women have performed exceptionally well. It is noteworthy that the increase in the number of female billionaires was comparatively more than the increase in the number of male billionaires.

Over the last five years, the number of female billionaires has increased by 46%, going from 160 to 233. The number of male billionaires has grown by 39%.

And what is the ruling industry? It’s technology. Yes, technology is the only industry where billionaire wealth has increased in 2018. The industry has seen a rise of 3.4%, to USD 1.3 trillion.

Performance of different countries

While we discuss the billionaires of the world, of course, you would like to know the performance of different countries in this. So let’s see how different nations have performed during this time.

We already told you in the beginning that due to different reasons, there was a dip in the billionaire wealth during 2018. The only country that did not suffer during this phase was the U.S. By the end of the year, the region was home to 749 billionaires who have a combined wealth of $3.6 trillion!

But still…

The world’s greatest number of billionaires come from the Asia Pacific region with 754 billionaires in all. Their combined wealth forms 36% of the global billionaire population.

Within the above-mentioned billionaire population, China alone accounts for 43% of the region’s billionaires. India makes up 14%, Hong Kong 9% and Japan just 4%.

Now coming to the countries who did not perform that well. The billionaire population of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa fell 5% to 598 individuals. The combined wealth of these three regions totaled up to $2.4 trillion.

Women joining the rank of billionaires

And how was the performance of ladies? Women have performed exceptionally well. It is noteworthy that the increase in the number of female billionaires was comparatively more than the increase in the number of male billionaires.

Over the last five years, the number of female billionaires has increased by 46%, going from 160 to 233. The number of male billionaires has grown by 39%.

This growth was led by women in Asia mostly. Partner and private banking lead, Julia Leong noted in the report, “While Asia continues to be seen as male-dominated cultures, it is heartening to see that the number of female billionaires has grown to more than double over the last five years.”
