Gmail’s new look is about to appear for more people, even if they didn’t ask for it

The new Gmail user interface, which began to roll out in February, brings Meet, Chat, and Spaces closer together and makes more use of Google’s Material You design effects. Your account will soon convert to the new view by default because as of today, it will no longer be possible to opt-in but only out.

Although it isn’t a significant shift, the improved experiences are given more attention as Google transitions from its current flavor-of-the-week messaging software to its Workspace suite, which is a superior alternative to Office.

If it’s not clear, the redesigned UI groups the buttons for Mail, Meet, Spaces, and Chat into a single list at the top of the left rail rather than displaying a number of discussions from each one in a list. Without everything displayed at once, they are still easily accessible, and you can rapidly join a conversation in any section since a list appears when you hover your cursor over its icon.

Additionally, since Chat and the others are no longer shown underneath your inboxes and labels, it is a little easier to only display one type of communication on screen at a time.

The Quick Settings menu will allow you to select which apps are there, and if you’d prefer, you can go back to the previous appearance, according to Google. It could take longer than a few weeks for your interface to move over on its own because, contrary to the typical 15-day deployment for new features, Google claims this one is an “extended rollout.” This applies to both Workspace and personal Gmail accounts. If you just want to test it out, you should be able to do so right now from the quick settings menu as long as you’ve already switched to Chat from Hangouts and placed Chat on the left-hand menu.
