Apple to develop, ‘Well-Crafted’ Privacy Regulations After Facebook Data Scandal

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, says that collection and use of people’s data is serious and well-crafted regulations are essential for it. After Cambridge Analytica scandal, politicians are asking for certain regulations and changes of social media. Some users have already started to follow the #DeleteFacebook movement. Co-founder of WhatsApp and entrepreneur Elon Musk deleted the pages for SpaceX and Tesla from Facebook while others are demanding for a serious change.

In this situation, Apple CEO Tim Cook also raised his voice calling for new rules and regulations and some changes at Facebook for user’s data. He believes that such situation was predicted long ago and it is the time for bringing a serious change. He called the situation with Facebook ‘serious’ at the annual China Development Forum in Beijing. In response to a question about the scandal, Tim Cook said “I believe that this situation is so dire and has become so large that certain well-crafted regulations are necessary”. From his point of view on privacy of data, the ability to store what you’ve been browsing for years, your contacts, things you like and dislike and other minute details of life should not exist. Cook said that Apple for number of years Apple worried that something like the current situation of Facebook data scandal might occur. Unfortunately such situation has arrived. People from different countries are giving up data on social media without completely knowing what they are giving and the possibilities about what could happen. Using private data without user’s consent is a serious issue and people are already angry on it.

Apple had an integration with Facebook of apps that were tied to Facebook which required certain friend information. But, this integration already ended in 2016. According to Apple, information was never sent to iCloud or any Apple server. It was stored on the user’s device for making certian tasks easier. Tim Cook had a brief discussion in China Development at Beijing. They also had a discussion on the decision of Trump to place tariff on Chinese goods. But, this decision is not yet finalized by the U.S Government. According to Tim Cook, countries embracing openness do exceptional things. He believes serious decisions which will do good for everyone will prevail.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that he was about to bring some regulations after the news that data from 50 million accounts on Facebook was used without the consent of users by Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica is a digital consultancy which is hired by the Trump Presidential campaign. Data was used to target messages to voters during the 2016 presidential election. A trend of #DeleteFacebook already started on Twitter after this news. This situation has already hit Facebook. But, when a lawsuit Fan Yuan from Facebook shareholder said that the company partly knew about Cambridge Analytica’s data, Facebook is in more trouble. In regard to this issue, Facebook has taken a step to bring a new tool which appears at the top of the News Feeds which will let people know apps which have their information and offers easy steps to change permissions.

Number of politicians have raised voice in this matter. It is certain that Facebook will be coming with some changes to prevail among other social medias and maintain their reputation.
