Zoho Corporation founder Sridhar Vembu has publicly advocated for implementing a legal prohibition on social media access for young children across India. Responding to widespread international legislative updates regarding minor digital access restrictions, Vembu emphasized outdoor activities and traditional reading habits over screen engagement for young citizens.
Sharing his perspective on social platform X, Vembu stated: “India should ban social media for young children too. I believe young children should read physical books, play in the dirt under the sun and stay away from social media!”
His comments directly referenced recent international legislative developments highlighted by media personality Sidhant Sibal, who reported: “France passes law banning social media for under 15s, becoming the first country to do so in EU. Existing accounts to be closed. Australia was the 1st country to do so. Indonesia was the first non western country to do so. UAE, Malaysia, UK have announced banned.”
The proposal has reignited global policy discussions among government authorities, educators, mental health professionals, and technology regulators concerning youth screen exposure, algorithm addiction, digital safety, and potential age-verification protocols across digital platforms.
