Three adult sisters from Dhauriya village in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district—Saroj (20), Savitri (19), and Santosh (18) – have performed an unofficial wedding ceremony with their cameraman, Vikas, at Chamunda Mata Temple. The trio, who work as social media content creators, stated they chose to marry the same man to avoid separation when their families began making individual marriage arrangements.
Addressing public backlash online, the sisters defended their decision by drawing parallels to Hindu epic traditions. Saroj confirmed: “We have lived together since childhood and could not imagine living apart. When we realised that marriage would separate us, we even thought of ending our lives. Later, we decided that instead of dying, we would stay together and marry one man. We are all adults and took this decision willingly.” Vikas concurred, adding: “I respected their emotions and agreed to marry them because I wanted them to stay together.”
The ceremony carries no legal standing under current Indian matrimonial statutes. Allahabad High Court Advocate Anurag Pandey clarified that under the Hindu Marriage Act, a man cannot legally marry multiple women simultaneously, rendering the union void ab initio in the eyes of the law. Meanwhile, Hasanpur Circle Officer Pankaj Tyagi noted that while no formal complaints have been filed by parents or local groups, police are monitoring the matter for potential statutory violations.
